Good morning, let's start off our podcast with a dad joke. Are you ready?
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:uh, well, you are a dad, I am ready.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah. Yeah taco emergency call 9 1 1 Is that the best Okay, brother. Tell me what your plans are. What do you not wait a minute? Is there silence? There's not another voice. We don't hear
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:it is a little silent extra today because this week Stewart is on vacation.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:good for him.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, well, he, I mean, he deserved it. So, I mean, every day I've wanted to ring his neck while he is gone.'cause there's stuff I had to do that he should have done. But, you know, Hey,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:I'll just sit here and be quiet
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:No, no, he, he
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:With that
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:he tried to get everything done before he left. So I've just been, there's just been small things and it takes a village. We know that. Well, okay. So trying to figure out what we were going to discuss today. Um, and you know, it's just the two of us. And, um, so I thought, well, it'd be an easier, like conversation, even though it's what we always do anyway. Um, but I thought, you know, we go, we've worked together for 20 years, which is, Crazy. Um, and there are a lot of things that we know about each other, but there, I think there's a lot of things that we don't know about each other. And then I know definitely people who listening at home. Um, even if they've been customers virus for 20 years, there's a lot of stuff that they don't know about. So I thought this would be a little interesting, like getting to know you, um, humor field section. So
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:podcast speed dating?
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:sure. Listen, you know, neither one of us have dated in a very long time. I can't imagine having to do that.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:This is gonna be our version of tinder
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, but if I swipe or, I don't even know which way you swipe. I know you swipe. If I swipe,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:don't either. I
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I'm afraid I'm going to lose you on the computer screen.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it is not, not good out there. So I've been told. So,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:well,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:anyway.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I don't even, I don't, oh lord, Jeremy and I went to dinner the other night, and I won't mention the restaurant in case the people that, um, well I'm gonna talk about listen to the podcast. But it was
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:the tens of tens? Come on,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:well,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:You are fooling yourself.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:how many people have stopped you to tell you they listen to the podcast, that you have no clue who they are? Okay, well, steals. Well, seven. She could have been one of the seven. I don't know. Um, but we were at dinner and it was, um, Oh God, maybe I got my inspiration for this. Podcast from her because they were literally sitting at the table next to us And she was like getting into her phone and then asking all these questions And they were like the worst questions ever and I thought lord if this is a first date Doomed and my husband just kept looking at him. It's like if you if you need help blink blink twice It was just it was it was really odd. Okay Yeah, all right. So what I I have questions and we'll both answer them, but I thought these would be things um You That would be interesting to know because I think it tells you more about you as a whole and your life and, and, and I don't know, interesting stuff. Okay,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Okay, let's see. This is your experiment. So I got to see what you're going with.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Well, you know, I'm, I'm winging most of it, but you know, hey, we're, we're doing our best. You know, we, my goal was to write all these questions down yesterday and then of course, you know, we had our live sale last night and that takes half a day to get ready for and then you got to do that at night and then, you know, they just, you know, there's not enough time. Okay. Um, so the first question is, well, no, it's two thoughts put into one, I'll listen to the, Julia Louis Dreyfus podcast, I don't remember what it's called, but it's funny. Um, and one of the questions that she always asks somebody in her podcast is if there was something that you would have gone back to in your life and said, yes. And basically, like, is it, what's the one thing that you'd like to go back and change? Or is there one thing you'd like to change?
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Um, whatever, whatever. I'd like to have been a school teacher.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Would you? Or you would have? Oh,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:What? I don't know. That's the because I didn't do it and I didn't pursue it. I don't know that answer. But that was the other thing that, um, called to my mind. Heart. This is what you need to be when you grow up. This is what you need to be when you grow up. And I didn't do it. Um, So in the heart of who I am, I think I am a teacher. I just do it in a different way.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Oh, You
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:And,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:are.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:and, Knowing what my clients go through as a teacher, Teacher what I knew my mom went through as a teacher, and I think that's part of the reasoning. I saw, the challenge of wanting, not to do that, seeing what my wife goes through as a school teacher. Now, Chloe's new. She's only a few weeks into it, and she literally, her principal, her, her team of teachers and the students of all wrapped their arms around her and giving her love, right? Uh, but I see the school system as a challenge and knowing my personality and I might've changed it and adjusted it. Um, I probably would've been fired the first week, but I doubt it truthfully.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:day one.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:you know what, I say, you say that and, um, I could have, I believe, see, here, here's the problem. I've only worked for myself for the very longest of time and therefore then it changes how you think and approach and do because if you don't do it, fix it, say it, then anybody, they'll run over top of you. Right. And, you have to be strong and you have to trust your instinct and you have to trust your, gut when it comes to business, really, once it's said and done, you've got to listen to the voice. And I think that's true in life, but in particularly on your own business, you've got to listen to your gut. And if your gut said, even though everybody around you is saying you need to do that, you need to do this, you need to do this, you listen, you take it in, but if your gut comes back and says, no, I got to do this, you just have to go with that. I don't think that can be necessarily true. And other jobs that you work for somebody else, right? Because you ultimately kind of got to do what people tell you to do. And that's not, it's a complete opposite for me in business ownership. I'd see it completely different. Now that doesn't mean you don't dismiss people. It doesn't mean you hear people. It doesn't mean you pivot, but ultimately you got to listen to your gut. Maybe that's true in life. I don't know, but I feel like, um, I would have listened more because it would have been a, a necessary aspect of how you work with people, uh, that you're, you're like, you're rolling your eyes. I know you're thinking, he's like, No! because you're like, I worked with you and you didn't listen to anybody.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Well, no, that was 20 years into you being an adult.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Well, I
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:And I had already experienced it like
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:but you know, you'd been adult and you had, you'd owned your own business. You had worked at other places. Like you said, you had, you made decisions. You did your thing. And by the time I started to meet you, you, I mean, you were 30. Well, we won't get into it, but somewhere in the mid thirties. And, um, so you've started to figure out who you were. Yeah, somewhat you start started to figure out who you were, right and wrong and where you stand. So now I know I get what you're saying. Because like, I do think like, if you got if you would have went in at 2021 into a school and knowing you and knowing your heart You would have done anything possible for the kids, right? Like it would have, you would have always been there and built them up. And cause you are like the world's biggest cheerleader and teacher. Um, but I mean, our luck, you would have gotten like some horrible principal and you'd have been out the first day, you know?
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah, and it could have been, it could have been, um, I, I, I see, um, I see our school system, um, struggling and, uh, you know, it's from an outside, outside perspective, but also see those who are trying to hang on by their claws to, to change it and, make it better. And then, you know, I'm not sure when it's going to air, but we're just off the cusp of the most recent school shooting. And, you know, other people are like, oh, we've got, you know, uh, we got to change things. We got to, you know, I want to, I best do not want to hear that. I want to pray about this. It's like, I don't want to pray anymore. I want to do something. And I really am at a place of being numb about this. And this is the last, last place I want to be. Um, my heart is with my wife who, Is a math teacher and the two people that got killed were math teacher. So in a middle school, she's a middle school math teacher and it makes it even a connection and my sweet daughter in the school system. So I'm in the trenches of putting the, two things I love the most in a place that's not safe. And, um, we're not listening. We're not listening. And so I'm not going into politics. We're not listening. So long story is, um, you Our school system is in trouble, but there's so many reasons why. And I'm thankful that I have two people that I love the most that are hanging on and trying to make a difference. And they will, they will. So that's, that's, that's it. So I wonder, could I have been that person? That, that's, along just, I wonder if I could have been that person.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:you could have. Yeah. You, you, you would have been the, you would have been, uh, Alexander the great. I think you would have been a, uh, a big, a conqueror. I do think that, but you've conquered many other things. So it's not like you've not, it's not like you've failed a lot.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:uh, also thought this. I will, Never be the smartest person in the room, but what I will be is the one that survives. And because, like, you give me a challenge and I'll actually, I'm going to outthink you, outwork you, and outdo you. And that's, if you don't have that drive, then, you know, I actually, I think you've looked at me before and you've said to me, not everybody has the same drive. Um, intensity or work driver that you do. And I've had to dial it back because I can be pretty rough on people. And I have, I've kind of softened with that because it landed on me learning this years ago, they don't see it and I'm a seer, right? You are a seer and,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:My husband might disagree with you.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:well, you see work. I can't, I can't commit to what you say at home,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:It's not what I say. It's just about cleaning at home.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Well, see, that's different. I'm talking about, well, it is cleaning here, but you're at work to give you all the credit where you see what needs to be done for work and you never stop. So you're a seer, you're a different seer, but you're a seer and there are a lot of non seers in the world that needs to be done. Right? And those who see, um, it's tough, right? Because like, I'm like, how can you not, I literally have said this a thousand times, how can you not see this? Right? And it's like, I'm equating it to being cleaning, straightening, fluffing, fixing, doing, right? Literally, just seeing the store needs to be cleaned. Now, stop there. The crew that we have and the people there, we've got sears. And it's been a wonderful experience. I said that, you know, I started redisplaying something a few weeks ago, and normally I would have to clean the shelf and do all this stuff. I'm not. Past cleaning the shelf, but that's not my, needed expertise. I just need to take the shelf and make it pretty. Instead of spending 15 minutes cleaning it. Well, the last couple of times I've been displaying stuff, it is clean. And I'm like, Oh Lord, I love this. And I purposely told those who I knew were going the seers of that part. They're seers of different things. And I told those two people, I thank you because you made my work and day easier. So that's also something you need to see is acknowledge the good, not the bad. Always say to people the good stuff, not the bad stuff. Fair enough. Okay. Anyway, that was 14 minutes already into this. One, one question.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Well, you know, um, for me. I have always tried to, uh, believe whatever decisions I've made in life were what I was supposed to be. And we, I, you know, I've mentioned how, you know, numbers I see, and then I feel like that I'm where I'm supposed to be and those kinds of things. The only thing that I wish I could have changed, was, or I would have said yes to, was I marched drum corps one year, in 2001 and my feet, I don't, uh, we haven't had any problems since then. So, um, you know, whatever, but the bone structure that I have in my feet are kind of wonky. Um, and I was in incredible pain, um, taking ridiculous amounts of, whatever pain medicine at the time just to get through, the season. And so when I went to the doctor after that, the foot doctor was like, Hmm, yeah, you probably shouldn't do that again. Um, cause I don't think you'll make it through another season. Cause by the end of the season, my feet were so destroyed. And so I didn't go back with the age out basically the oldest year you can be 21 before you age out And so I didn't go back to do it and I were I regret that because I know it would have been an incredible Experience and I would have loved every minute of it but the opposite side of that is that was the last Summer vacation that I was able to take with my grandparents where we went to Florida so I was able to be with them um to Pawpaw's last trip to the beach that he just, he loved. They loved the beach. it's like there's those kinds of things, right? So it's like, okay, it wasn't like I totally missed out, but that's the one thing. If I could have changed everything, I would have, um, it's not one thing.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:You didn't feel like you finished it,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:yeah, I feel like I finished it. Yeah. You know, but, you know, I had a great summer. I still have incredible friends that we marched together and love them all and learned lots of things and, all that kind of stuff. But that's the one thing I look back and I'm like, yeah, okay. You know, I've always tried to be really cognizant of not taking anything for granted. Um, and I won't say that that was always at the forefront of my mind. Um, it definitely, that switch kind of flipped when my grandfather became ill, you know. back in 2012, 2010. Um, and so ever since then I've been much more present anytime that with I've tried not to take anything for granted. Um, every hug, every pad, every love you on the phone, um,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:shook you up, didn't it?
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah. Yeah. And, uh, so I don't, And it may be because I don't, I don't know, but I tried to, I just try to be aware and appreciative of that moment. Cause you know, eventually they going to be gone. But like, you know, every time I call granny, she would, she'd say, hello. I'd say, Hey granny. And she'd say, Hey hun. And like every time she said, Hey hun, like it was in a tone of voice that she never used with anybody except for me. And um, yeah.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah. Well, you're the first, well, your mom's an only child. So you were the first grandchild
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:well, Mom, well, Mom did have a sister when they were young and she passed away, but yeah, no, Mom, Mom was the
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:but okay. I'll revert back to, she was raised because she lost her, uh, her sister early on, basically as an only child. I'll say it that way.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, um, but yeah, so and then I had my sister, um, but you know, I was the one calling and checking in on her every night and all those kind of things. But so, I mean, I was the favorite. I was told this week, you're, you're, you are my favorite. And I said, I have that effect on people. I
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Okay. You got another question for
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:do. Okay, so this has to do with design, since, you know, we talked about design stuff. What, what one thing do you wish that you were better at? In design or what would you, you had more knowledge? Like what's, where do you feel like to you? Like,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Oh gosh. There's lots of things.'cause I don't have, I don't have this background. I have an accounting background and so I feel like I, okay. I know, I
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Don't go 45 minutes.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:at visualizing the space of the room that it's harder for me. It's not scale. Uh, it's like if people are doing a remodel and the wall needs to be moved or the kitchen needs to go on this side of the house or that. I'm like, I kind of can't see that you give me the house. You give me the rooms and this is the parameters. This is what you got to work with. I'll make it look real, real, real good down to the last toothpick, right? That's the detail I am, but I'm trying, I'm not an architect, right? And a lot of designers, Stuart is. exceptionally good at it. He should be an architect because that's, he sees the space and he's better at giving the space than he, and I think that's his joy as opposed to putting the last toothpick in the room, right? And I wish I had that wheelhouse. I wish I had that ability. There you go.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I, I'm similar in that. I wish that the architectural side of it, I wish that I was better or understood it better. Um, Cause like just to sit down and draw plans, that's not me, you know, uh, and I have a pretty good grasp on, proportion and size, like without having to be in the space,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah. Yeah.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Stuart has the ability to like go in a house and remember every turn and every doorway. I agree. I don't have that, um, but I can, so if you tell me to go from one room to the next, I can't, in my mind, I don't, I can't walk from one to the next. Well, that's not, maybe not, if I've been in the house multiple times, yes. If I've been in the house once, no, he can do it in one. Um, but I can see the whole room in my head. Like, if I'm not in the room, I can see it and then be able to turn in that space and like know what's like, know what's going to be too big. And I don't know, you're that way too, as far as like
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:No, I can see. that it's it's more about give me the room but if you want me to reimagine the room smaller bigger backside of the house Just like I can't do that. Not easy You can get there I can get there, but it is Not my strength. Um when I was redoing um, or doing the basement I had this, uh, I thought I knew what I was doing, and this is where the kitchen is going to be in the basement, and this is where the family room is going to be. But I started looking at it, and it's like a little self doubt, and when you have good friends, and you trust them, and you know that they're good at this. So I knocked on the door of my friend, who's been on our podcast, uh, Barrett. Because Barrett is much like Stuart. That she's not really Too worried about the minute chachkis. That's just not her thing. It's about, she should have been, or is, and she can do the room layout and the architect, and so she came to the basement and she's like, Oh no, you do this. You put this and this and this and this. And it's one of those things she, I asked her, I said, are you sure? And she kind of looked at me and I said, Okay, I just fired myself. Whatever you tell me to do. That's why you're here. I trust you. And that's what customers have done for me, right? They can't see it. They don't understand it, but they say, I trust you. And that's what I had to do was let go and say, if I could have done it. I wouldn't have asked her to be here if I trusted my instinct. I wouldn't have asked her to be here, but I don't. And she's saying this is what the answer is. I have to trust and I'm going to trust and it was 100 percent the right answer. And so, um, that that's also what I want you to lean into is if you hire somebody, trust them. Right? If you didn't, right? If you could have done it yourself, what the hell am I doing here?
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Right. Yeah. Well that's, we, we have talked about that. If you hire somebody, you know you need to
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah, just trust.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:ask. Ger Uh, Gertrude.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah, yes. And I go back to, it doesn't mean you don't question something, but ultimately, like, if you don't know and somebody's telling you that, okay, then that's what we gotta do.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Mm-Hmm. Are there designers that you're really like digging?
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Um,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:we, we, we can see if we have, they have social handles. We'll put'em down in our, our show notes. But. You
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Gassler. Um, always That's, that's kind of it. That's it. There's one. There's one. There's one. I mean, that's, that's okay. Uh, I'm sure there's lots of others out there. Um, I could find appealing, but I really don't know. Don't get on social media and dig into it. I really don't look in to that kind of thing. So therefore there's not anybody, but I have all of her books and I'm kind of like a groupie. And I got one of her signed books. So Jane at the rag peddler has a friend that sells really high end linens that was from new Orleans. Anyway, long story is, um, Jane and the high end linen person were friends. And then Jane was going to go to. Atlanta with the high in linen pursing, and I'm talking about 10, 000 for linens for one bed. I mean, crazy, right? And they were going to meet, meet Suzanne because Suzanne was utilizing, uh, and knew this friend, uh, Jane's friend in the bedding. And I found out about it and I said, could you please get my book signed? And that's like, that's the only time I've ever been like a groupie or felt like I loved the Beatles. And she did, she wrote me a nice little note and I, and she's like, she doesn't have a clue who I am, but I was like, I really, really, um, not many. People impressed me as far as, um, I don't get stage fright. I don't get impressed by much. Right. I mean, I literally, I can, I can meet Bill Clinton tomorrow and I go, yeah, okay, whatever. Right? Uh, I'm thankful, I'm grateful for you too, but there's not, just because I have this approach of we're all kind of equal in this. I can appreciate what you've done, but there's not, there's not much star power there. And she's my star power.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:also love Suzanne. She's been, um, very, uh, uh, Influential, I think in many people's homes around the country, especially with her, her partnership with Ballard's and other, um, other lines for me, I have, um, well, there's one that I know that we share, but he's more of an architectural designer, but he still does house is Bobby McAlpin.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Now this is real money. This is like old money. This is like, you know, old, new, old, it doesn't matter. It's just millions and millions and millions. And you know, I ain't got it, but I do love his attention to, uh, mixing natural materials and just the lines and the stone and the Lord, it would just gives me chills. It's a good, um, there is another architect who I love and I follow and his name is Steve. And I don't know if his last name is Tyke, Tech, Teek, T I E K. I'll, I'll, um, put him down in the bottom. But he's out of Utah. And I think he would really appreciate his, uh, uh, eye for trim work and details. It's, it's just, it's next level. Um, mm, it's so good. And then the other one who I appreciate a lot, um, and I think she's got great style, is Ashley Gilbreth. Um, who is, I
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:See, I'm learning from you. I don't even know these names. so here we
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:she's out of, uh, Birmingham and so she has a very classic Southern upscale take and she's done a lot of, um, well it was, so I found her on Instagram years ago and followed her and I just liked the look. It was all very good. Southern and classic, but it's just fresh and I don't know. Um, and, um, I was following her on Instagram and then we were down in Rosemary beach and then she had a store. She had a little shop that she was like, this is making sense. She doesn't live here. Well, then I realized she was doing a lot of houses down there. So she has that kind of Rosemary beach, um, aesthetic. So it's cool. Clean and, and, and beautiful, but, um, she just really did a cabin. I think her and her husband bought a cabin in, I don't know if it's the cashiers or I don't, I don't know where they're at, but somewhere in, in that area and, um, she posted pictures of this, this cabin and it's unlike any cabin I've ever seen. This is a cabin, like I instantly wanted to buy a cabin and do and do one. It's inspired by this because it was so it was so good. But I'll share I'll put the
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Absolutely. No, I'm curious
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:they're so they're so good and so beautiful.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Okay, Perfect.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:asked two more questions, and then we'll figure it out. Okay, so maybe 30 minutes. Somebody asked this question. Okay. I don't know how serious they are. And if they were just saying, if I'd ask it, but how many pillows do you sleep with at night?
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:One.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Me too But I when they said this I thought this is an interesting question because I only sleep with one My husband sleeps with two and what I instantly thought of was, you know This is something that everybody's very unique with and different and you know, you need what you need to sleep But I had clients Uh, on and we were working on their primary and we were going to do do pretty pillows and you know I'm not one to try to shove 700 pillows on a bed, right? Um, so I did some euros that I did like a long Lumbar or something. I can't remember exactly what it was And then it was like she's like, where are these gonna go? And then she just kept pulling these pillows from the floor and I said, what are those? She goes these are the pillows we sleep with there were like eight You Pillows, and she's like, well, I need two for my head. I need one. I need two for my front. I have one between my legs There's one behind me and then she's like these are just mine Those aren't talking about my husband's and then there's like a one of those birthing pillows Like, you know, like that pregnant women have that they like I was like You need like three beds. I don't know how people sleep in a bed. Well,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:that I've never ran into that, you know, just not.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I said, look, I don't know what you're going to put me in. But when a company comes over, just throw them in the floor on the other side. I don't, you know, if it matters to you, like
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:No,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:out of me, I don't think people coming
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Kathy found me this crazy pillow because I have neck issues and it's this tempur pedic pillow that's, uh, cooling gels because I get hot at night, but it's also, um, contours and it's this weirdest looking pillow, but it cradles my little neck and I used to have headaches all the time. And when she got me that crazy pillow, it has been, uh, A savior for me, a savior for me. I should probably post that pillow. Cause I'm telling you, anybody has neck problems and sleep at night. This is the best pillow in the world. Period.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:not going to test. He takes this pillow everywhere. It goes everywhere we go. Hmm.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:later, I couldn't move my neck. A pillow has changed my little world a little bit. One pillow.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:One pillow. Well,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:It's not my pillow. either. Have you ever tried one of those? My dad bought one and it's this weird little, it is. It's weird. It's like a beanbag pillow. It's like a pillow, like a beanbag. It's odd,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I never,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Anyway, I'm not beating up on him. I just, I found it
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:no, he's crazy. He is crazy. You beat up on him. Everybody knows that man is crazy.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Uh, I'm not going down that path, so let's go move on. Next
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I'm going, I'm going down. He's fucking nuts. Okay. Um, okay. If there, if what is the one meal. This is like, it's not all just design really. It's like all about the
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah. Yeah. It's, it's, it's speed dating on Tinder for the,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah. There we go. Swipe right. So I don't know which way again. So I don't know what I just did. I might have blocked you. Um, Oh, the one meal that means home to you. Like when you bite into it and you're like, Oh, this is home.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Oh, I, I can make this one easy. It's not even a meal. It's one thing. It is my, yeah. My mom's macaroni salad. And I know, I know I have this, this reoccurring longing my life to know that one day when I don't have my sweet mama with me.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Mm hmm.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Mm-Hmm. Mm-Hmm
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:there for you. Hmm. Well, now she we're gonna have to get Miss Sandy to make make some this because I don't think I've ever tried it and now I gotta have it.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:It's just basic, but it is her and she sticks her finger in it and that is
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Okay, hold on. Maybe I don't need to.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:no, it's good It's good. It's good But I just for some reason that is that's what I think of and I'm like, I'll know one day
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:I won't have that macaroni salad
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, I got you. Understand that very well. I don't have anything that my mama made. Because I love my mama, but she, she is not a good cook. Um, I
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:She's a good woman good
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:oh, she, she's a good woman. We all have, we all have our flaws, but she is a good woman. She loves me. Um, unconditionally, at least I think anyway, um, I don't know. I've pissed her off a few times.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:imagine that
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:but, um, listen, I was right. It doesn't matter. Um, but I still love my mama. Um, but she didn't do all the cooking. Granny did. Cause granny was always the big cook. Right? So all of the meals that in my life that mean anything all have come from my grandmother. and the meal that she had. was she just called it pepper steak. I don't know where it came from. Uh, you know, I don't, but it's egg noodles and I'll, I have the recipe. I'll, I'll put it down or put it in our. Uh blog so people can see it because it's one of my favorite one of my favorite things on the planet and um I'm trying to think I know it was the week that she passed away and it I I can't I can't remember what it was, but uh, I came home and jeremy had fixed it and He just knew He knew I needed
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Mm
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:it was, but it's a real close tie between that and her fried green tomatoes. So, um, and you know, fried green tomatoes are one of those things. I just don't understand how they can taste so different everywhere you go. Cause hers always tasted the same, like always tasted the same
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:You've done this before. They're really simple. What you, what she made, what you make.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:she, I mean, she literally, she sliced them, she salted them to pull out, you know, all the excess liquid. And when she had to say she salted them, she salted them. Um, don't be fearful of that. And then she, you know, she used Crisco and melted that. And then she, she put a little bit of flour, but it was
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:So when you say Crisco, was it liquid Crisco or that the, the congealed?
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:congeal, well you melt it, yeah, you take that and you put it
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:But it doesn't matter, basic, but it doesn't need to be Crisco.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:yeah, she loves, that's what she used, that was granny's cooking stuff,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Well, see, I think that's part of the character of it. I think it's the subtle nuance. That's the character of it.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:and, you know, that was in the frying pan, and then she literally just dipped the, um, the salted, um, She just dipped the fried, well, hell, she just dipped the green tomatoes that had been salted, um, and put them in the cornmeal. No, she had salted and also peppered the cornmeal because, you know, more salt is always better. Um, and,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:she she lived a long time, so it
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:oh yeah, Lord, you know. And, um, and then she just fried them. So it was a real thin, it wasn't like a batter or anything like that. It was very, very easy. You just do it until they're golden brown. You put them over and, ooh, mm,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Well, I, I want to be remiss to say this food is my love language. That's what gives me, um, that tells me that I'm loved. And so like Kathy, and it's really almost at Easter's really when she does it, she makes a seven layer salad, but it's actually a six layer salad because she doesn't put peas in it because if anybody knows, I hate peas. I hate peas and her fat cousin llama and uh, so I know that that seven layer salad is
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Mmhmm.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:And I love that so much because you can have it But she made this for me and I just love that salad because of that and then kathy's grandmother had um on her father's side um Mert had the world famous chicken and dumplings, and she would not share this recipe until literally she was at our house dying of cancer. And we have these framed recipes of the women of Kathy's life and Ian, I'll tell you that story in another podcast, but there's framed recipes of all the women in her life on our wall. And, Kathy said, Mammal Mert, don't pass without sharing this because she had grown children. She wouldn't share this recipe. So Mert wrote it out and it's framed and Chloe And Kathy take the recipe down and they always make it usually Christmas Eve or on Thanksgiving either one of those holidays usually just once a year but that also when I eat that I think of memories and life and all things good
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, food is such an incredible thing.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah,
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:To tie people to memories and times and places.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:takes us and he he makes the reservations when we go to Atlanta. I'd like food and I eat everything but he takes us to this restaurant. That's I don't know some urban spoon. I don't know what it's freaking called and it's, you know, it's it's country kitchen, right? And they have, you know, Fried chicken. And I was like, well, what kind of potatoes you have? Oh, we don't have potatoes. We have grits or they have lard lim lims or something like that. Like you're a country restaurant without a mashed potato, a fried potato, baked potato, scalloped potato, a boiled potato, butter potato, not a potato. No, no potato.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Okay, well let me paint you the accurate picture of what this is. It's a southern, it's an updated southern restaurant. Not a country. Southern. Two different things. And, there, it's not even
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:when he did twenty nine dollars for a piece of chicken. Come
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I mean, well, everything, you know, everything's expensive when you go into the city anyway. But they did, he just wanted, he wanted, he was good with the fried chicken. It came with greens. He didn't want the
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Very good chicken. Yeah
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:and then he was like, can I just get mashed potatoes? And she says, we don't have mashed potatoes. And he's like, how do you not have mashed potatoes? She goes, well, we have scalloped potatoes. I don't want scalloped potatoes. I want mashed potatoes. I'm sorry, sir. We don't have mashed potatoes. How are you a Southern restaurant? Don't have mashed potatoes. I'm sorry, sir. We don't have mashed potatoes. That's more of like how it went. So
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:very very good. They're very good. We went there the last time we were there and they really look with all jokes aside that the scallop potatoes are very very good I still don't understand how you don't have fried potatoes mashed potatoes, but whatever.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:I'm with you. It's interesting, but I don't know. Listen, mashed potatoes. Yeah. Okay,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:seems basic
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:last question is, and if you have one, you can ask. If you
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:I don't have anything. Anything to bring to the table. Yes.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:you had a tagline, a phrase, a statement that you felt was represented you and your life and your spirit as a whole?
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:No. Yeah. It's a sign. And my wife bought it a thousand years ago. And you'll, you'll know this. Work hard. Be nice.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:yeah.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, very simple. Yeah.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah. Look, that. that's, that's, that's all you gotta do. The rest of it will fall in place. Go to work. Don't expect anybody to give you anything, right? Be grateful for those who pick you up and lift you up and say, thank you, but don't expect it. Right? There are no guarantees and every opportunity, when you can, be nice to somebody.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Absolutely. No. I thought about this one. And I thought, you know, It was instant when I said it, um, and for me, it's just, I think it's, it has just always been something that's just always rolled off my tongue. Um, there was an occurrence with a coworker of ours and something had happened, somebody had come into the store and, um, You know, it was just, it was kind of disappointing. It was, it was just, it wasn't a good situation. And I said, well, I said, just remember we're all God's children. And, um, and I was like, you know what? And I thought that came from at the time, just a visceral gut response. But I was like, yeah, no, that's it. We're all God's children. And so I just always try to, um, we're all just trying to do our best. Sometimes failing miserably.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:well, you know what, the first thing that popped to me is, because you are gay, some people don't see you as God's children.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Yeah, well, yeah,
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:yeah.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Fuck you. Who thinks that, right? And that's as strong as I can say of how much I love
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:Oh, love you too, friend. All right.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Yeah.
jeremy_1_09-05-2024_090344:All right. Well, work hard and be nice. And remember, we're all God's children. And we'll be back next Wednesday with another podcast. Hopefully Stuart will be back from the beach. I don't know. He might have, he was swimming with sea turtles yesterday. So he might lose a finger. I don't know.
squadcaster-bge5_1_09-05-2024_090330:Well, he's a little man, he can ride some of those sea turtles. Hmm.
