What do we have in mind to talk about today,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, you sent the email the other day about the myths debunked. And I thought that that was an interesting little

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

About the what?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I didn't read it

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

myths, myths debunked.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Gotcha. Okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

And I think we can do it in all kinds of various

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

about design or UFOs or conspiracy theories

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, if we,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Whatever. Yeah. This is a show about UFOs, you dumbass.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

If you have data about UFOs, then let's, let's provide that to

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

they're real. they're, real

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

love to know.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

So, so today we'll, we will talk about myths debunked and I think there's a lot of different ways that we can do that\

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Okay. Let me read this to you.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I think there

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Only people with a lot of money can have an interior designer and it goes on to say 1 of the most common myths about interior design. That is a luxury reserved only for the wealthy. In reality, interior designers can work with a range of budgets. Skilled designers possess the ability to transform any space while being mindful of financial constraints. They can offer cost effective solutions, repurposing existing furniture, and sourcing affordable yet stylish decor items. That's the first among interior designers myths. You have to have a lot of

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

yeah, I was going to say, so in a nutshell, you got to be rich. Which is not true.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah, and we that's just not true. It's just not

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

no, well, I will think that that, uh, what they've said there is a real sugar coated, soft coated version of, uh, the, the, the truth of, you know, it doesn't take a lot of money, because it doesn't, right? But

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

reupholster a piece of furniture, That's not cheap, right? Like there's things that you don't have to invest in. Right. But this is not just for the country club

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, and that's the thing you don't have to do. You don't all have to do it in the same day. You know, you can build on something. You can have a plan. You can say, Oh, I want to change my artwork right here and focus

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I read that it reminded me of my, one of my very first clients, they bought the smallest house in Heartland. They had just got married within months. And we're the same age because they've got kids in college. They're a little bit younger than me, but they were just, uh, when I started working, I was probably 28 and they were 25. They were young. And, I remember. Her saying that she wanted to get it right and what you just said Stuart that it didn't happen overnight and she was willing to buy one piece of the time and in and not instant gratification and she knew it would take a while and that client and that couple's still together and I still work with them uh it's 30 years later roughly and working on their third house and things that we did 30 years ago. Some of the things that we did, then they still have and because we got it right, you know, it was the right, console table for the four year, the right, uh, beautiful mirror, uh, that we got right. And it's not in their four year anymore, but it's in the back hallway and I've always, been pleased with that. Project because she got it. that, you know, you don't always have to buy cheap. Don't have to always buy expensive, but buy what you love. And, I still love that one. That, that's what reminded me. They, they did not have a lot of money, but what they bought, they got it right. And I always loved that one because it was, we're still going, we're still going 30 years later.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

When Dwayne sent this email about, this is something that maybe we would discuss. I wrote down a couple of like quick things of like, okay, these Some elements that I thought that these are common misconceptions, or maybe these are, there's one that's kind of a pain in the ass. It just pisses me off when I see it. People do it online. I guess it would be called an ick. I don't know. Um, but. Do you know what an ick is? Are we up on this vernacular? Okay, well the kids the kids these days call it an ick, something that just kind of

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

not on the

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

you're not, this, this is on

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

not on Twitter I'm not on the, I'm not on Twitter either because I can't stand Elon Musk, and I'm not giving him a penny. Um, no, so an ick is kind of like just a, like a turn off, or like a just like a It's just like a, ooh, like, that's just, that just gives you the cold chills, right? Like just away from it. So they call it an ick. So whatever. Um, and if you're younger than me and you really know what an ick is, and I got that really wrong, just bear with me today. Um, but one of the ones that I think that a myth is that people always are wanting to know what the trends are because they want to try to incorporate it in their home. And I think we have said this multiple times here. Trends come and go. You do not need to try to incorporate all of that into your home. Unless that's the trend is something that you just love and you've loved your whole

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

to say, unless you just want to be trendy. We,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, I mean, if you just want to be trendy and you got the money to spend it, go ahead,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

talked about early on in episode the lady had the leopard chair and leopard drapes and leopard rug and leopard underwear and leopard bra. She went all in. She went all in and that's okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

If that's, if she's loved that her whole life, you go right ahead.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

has.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah. Oh, yeah, I'm sure. Another myth that I, and I'm sure you all ran into with customers, and so we'll talk about home design stuff, but then we'll also talk about floral design stuff, because I also think that there's myths with that. Like people, it's something that they don't have a big understanding of, so they may not know how to do it.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Mm-Hmm. Absolutely. Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Um, but fabrics, a more expensive fabric is a better fabric. And I think we've also maybe slightly touched on that. And so that kind of correlates to pillows. That is not true. You know, a lot of this has to depend on how the fabric's produced, how it's dyed, how much of it is made, how much of it is purchased from the mill. All those things that go into a price, not necessarily how wonderful or how long lasting this fabric is going to be. So don't see an expensive pillow and go, Ooh, this is going to, this is a good, this is going to last forever. No chances are somebody bought expensive ass piece of fabric and then they paid somebody way too much to sew it together. And chances are, if it's an expensive pillow, Unless it's maybe from a few brands, they probably still have the same insert inside that many others do. And you're going to lay on it for eight months and then little goose feathers or little feathers are gonna start popping out and that's

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh, Yeah. it's

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh, Lord. Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

yeah. And so it's so frustrating. So there are, um, for me where to invest in some good money is make sure you get good pillow forms that you can put in that, I mean, they're still going to shed some to get something that you're not going to be poked in the ass every time you sit down.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Hmm. Okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Don't, don't be misled with price because as we know, the most expensive isn't always the nicest, best quality

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

not at all. Trouble with you, Stuart.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Do what? What'd

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

What's wrong with you today?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh, nothing. I'm thinking. A baby started kindergarten.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I knew

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

it. I knew it was something going

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Did you not know she started yesterday?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

yesterday. It's alright. She's a big

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

she excited?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah, she's very excited. Uh, on the way

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Tell him what she told

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

there, she went, Daddy. Cause you know, we've talked about it all week. She's very excited. She goes, Daddy, I think today I'm nervous. I said, well, sometimes nervous can mean excited. And she went, Oh no, I'm not nervous for me. I'm nervous for you. Cause you'll be lost. was like, Oh my God. And then I was quiet and she went, are you okay? Daddy? I said, yes, I'm okay. She goes, don't worry. After school, we'll go get ice cream. She worked every angle of that conversation. Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

we were, I was just talking to my mother-in-Law last night and my sister-in-Law about how kids will manipulate every situation to, uh, you know, to stretch it and make it work for them in any way that the candle figure it out.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, last night at two 22 in the morning, she was tapping on my shoulder. Again, she doesn't do that often. It's been a. Exactly a month since she's done that. She's tiny. Let's have a sleepover. I was like, oh my lord. I said, it's 2. 22 in the morning. We don't need to have a sleepover. I'm already asleep. So I was like, okay. And then like you, Duane, I heard Duane in the back of my head. My baby's moving out. So I went up to her room and I slept with her for the rest of the night last night. Because I know she won't ask me to do that very often. So I did.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Anyway.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Mm-Hmm.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

that voice. Yeah. It's a, it flies by faster than you ever can imagine. And you hear that also. And, uh, boy, I'm there. Am I there? Okay. So I'm going to read you another interior design myth. You ready? Get rid of everything and bring in new stuff. And this is what it says. Contrary to popular belief, interior designers do not have an agenda to eliminate all your belongings or replace them with expensive items. A good designer, We'll collaborate with you to understand your preferences, incorporating existing pieces into your new design whenever possible. The goal is to create a cohesive and personalized, which I think is a key keyword, personalized space that reflects your taste and lifestyle. Love all that, especially that last line, personalized, And your taste, because the one thing that I keep coming back to is I would walk in and somebody has worked with an interior designer and they've done stuff in that interior designer. Uh, you could tell who did it because it was the same, same old stuff. And I'm like, did you pick that out? No, they just brought it to me. No, that's brought to me. Lord, were you not part of the process? I'm not looking at you all saying that you do that, by the way. But you do. But,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Whatever.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You know, this podcast has been a useful tool. In that, it was just days ago, we were talking about the whole thing about, um, Artwork and, you know, personalized and things like that. So actually, uh, Kathy and I went, um, over to Cynthiana, which is a little community outside of Paris and a lovely client of mine I've been working with for just slightly over two years and her husband, um, Got brain cancer at 65 and passed away and of course, I didn't realize until we had this conversation last night that it was only months that he had passed away that I started working with her. And, uh, so with that said, you know, she's still healing, right? And she's still finding her way. And, um. Well, one of the things she had asked for early on, probably about a year into it, so about a year ago, uh, that she wanted a, uh, a painting at the bottom of her staircase. and she lives in this beautiful old two story historic house, in Cynthia. I mean, just gorgeous old house. And, You know, my, my broken record is, well, what gives you joy? What kind of artwork would you like? And she's like, I don't know. Whatever you want me to, whatever you want to bring me. It's like, no, no, no. The whole thing. Do you like the mountains? Do you like the sea? Do you like, she's, well, I don't know. Let me think about it. And she shared this story with me last night, how she came upon what piece of art that we ended up doing. She said, so I put that on hold and we did some chairs in the living room and other things and she said so it was a few minutes later and I was driving down the road and she said Frank, that's her husband in the past, started talking to me and she said he was telling me that About, reliving this vacation that he had, but so long story has he, before he passed away, he planned out a vacation to go to Europe and then went to Italy. And that was that was their last experience together. Right? And. So the voice in their head Frank saying Italy and so it kept popping up and she started googling pictures when she got back and there was, um, kind of like a pergola that had flowers on it and the background had the beautiful ocean and she said I walked past that with Frank multiple times, when we're on vacation in Italy and so she Printed out the picture and she was a former principal of a school and she had, a student and he's an artist and she sent in the picture and he painted that moment for her. And last night when I delivered something else to her, Kathy and I were there and I got to see the framed painting for the first time at the bottom of her staircase.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Now, let me tell you,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Mm-Hmm.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

emotional, right? And I asked her if I could tell her story because I want to do a Facebook post. And she's, and she said, you know, a year ago, I'll probably have to tell you no, she said, but, um, I can do it today. I can do it today. So it does go back to, These opportunities to get in people's soul in their life and when people say it's frivolous and what you do is, you know, doesn't have importance. I know last night was an important night, right? And it goes back to if you're listening to the customer and you personalize it, every time she walks past that, she's going to think of Frank and that moment. And it's just a picture. It's just a picture, but it's actually more than just a picture. It's her

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, it's a memory

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

It's her moment.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

It's a memory recall. Yeah. So that's what the good interior designers also do for me is they bring things to you and they highlight them and they ask the right questions. What gives you joy? That's what this podcast is about. This is what we're about. This is what this, our store is about. It's not about selling. It's about the things that we help you, um, acquire, giving you that joy.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Right.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Bam, bam. It's that

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Ooh, I

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

The more you know.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

sparkles just went

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

sparkled,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh, mercy. Thanks for bringing some

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

yes. Yes.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

sparkled, sparkled, So I, I have never said to somebody, get rid of everything.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No, I haven't either. You know, and it's funny, I have one client right now who, Is building a, small house, smaller house because all of their kids are gone, gone to college. They don't need that five bedroom, six and a half bath house anymore. So they're building a small. Three bedroom, two bath house. Um, and it was still,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I love that that's

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

well, I mean, compared to what they're coming from. Yeah. I mean, they're, they're coming from 6, 000 square feet and going to 2, 500. So that's still a large house. Yes. She said, I said, okay, let's go through your house and what are we going to bring? And she went. I went, what? She goes, I'm bringing pictures of my children because I don't want my other house to look like this house because I don't want to remember it. I was like, oh. She said, although we had great memories here, she said, my kids are making their own memories and that's what I need to fill my new house with. I went, Oh, okay. And I've, I've never had that. happen before, but it made sense when she said it. I was like, oh, okay, so yeah, but you don't have to get rid of everything. I mean.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Lord, no. I mean, if they come in, they say they want

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Right, if they elect to, yes. But otherwise, I mean, you can combine anything. I mean, because if you've already done one of the houses for them,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No, I have wanted to burn some things, right? Have you like, I love this cause my granny gave it to me. And I was like, Oh, dear Lord have mercy. Granny had bad taste, but I still work around it. Yeah. I still work around

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

of got to,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I'll always say, um, you know, we can, you can keep it. Like, obviously there's a connection to it. Maybe we just won't use it in this more of a, so usually most of the time when I walk into a space, it's always, they want to the whole space. They want to, they're doing it for them, but they're also doing it for guests. Right? Like they're, they're trying to, to make it a space that's. welcoming and warm and, um, beautiful for them and for them to share with their friends, and family. And so they don't, they're fine putting it in the guest room or upstairs in the hallway or somewhere else. They just want that. So that's fine with me. Cause I mean, I

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No, as long as it's in your, in your world, as long as it's in your world, right, it doesn't have to be prominent. As long as, no, that's, that's common that, uh, it's like, no, I don't have to have it in the front living room, but as long as it's in the house somewhere, and then I, you know, so the challenge is then to how to, um, address it and how to highlight it and truly pay respect once it's said and done. And that's, that's important.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Most of the time I'll always have somebody to say, um, it'll go something like now. I got this from blah blah blah blah, um, and they were really special to me and so I do want to keep it, but we don't have to use it here if, if you don't think that it's right. I'm like, okay, perfect. We'll use this somewhere else. Like, they give me, like, they tell me they're okay with that answer. I'm like,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

They know

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

that we're, They know the truth. They do. They do. It's, yeah. A

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

uh, Jennifer and, uh, she had this, Oh, uh, nightstand or whatever. It was one of those little small dressers that had like a little mirror on it. And it's kind of Victorian looking. You would put like one of those, pictures on it with the water,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Like a makeup stand or a wash stand, an old wash stand.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

watchstand. That's it. You know, so they're, they're old and they're kind of just old fashioned looking. And it was her grandmother's and it was very important to her. That's one of the few things that she had inherited or gotten, you know, through the, through the, through her life. So it was very, very important to her, but it just did not, it's country, right? And it just not, not anything I'd ever want. But I knew I had to make it work. And, uh, we were doing a guest bedroom and we're doing two twin beds. And I knew that that size was fit as the, the oversized not stand between the two beds. And I said to her. Um, can I paint this now at the time I didn't tell her what color I was wanting to do. I just said, can I paint it? We'll start with that. And she's like, oh, no, can't paint that granny. No, it's granny's oak piece. And no, I can't paint that. And I said, well, you do know, The look that we're trying to create, right? It's Serena and Lily and monogrammed and, um, and you know, all of that by this Oak thing in that room was not going to work. And, she said, no, I can't do that. And I said, look, I said, granny wouldn't care if it's painted or not truthfully. Right. She just loves the fact that you love it and it's important to you and you're keeping it in your house and that you want it. And I said, cause. You're just reinterpreting how to use it. It gives her the joy. The fact that you love it so much, you're willing to keep it. It's important to have it around you. She didn't care if you paint it right. It's the fact that you're keeping it. That's what you're keeping is the memory. And, uh, with that, she thought about it for a little bit and she said, yes. And I said, so I want to take the little Victoria mirror off the back. And now I want to paint it, uh, tomato red, high gloss lacquer. I forget what's going to spin off, uh, long story is, and we post a picture of the bedroom because it, we did use it, and I, it matches the monogram and I think it turned out beautiful, but I thought, oh lord, one day I'm going to get killed. But, um, I think Granny would be pleased to know that we kept, kept it and we kept part of her memory and, and the love of that piece in the house.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You have one, Stuart?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I shared mine.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You don't? Okay.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

We've not painted anything tomato red.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I have not painted anything tomato red.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I don't

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I did actually just paint a case that I remember from a child that was on the back porch of, of the house. I just painted it, lacquer black. Turned out good.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

That counts.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

So, yeah.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

And for a client or for you?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

it was something that was always in every house we lived

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You can remember back to your childhood?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah. The covered wagon kind of shadowed it, but that was one piece that we always took across the prairie.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah. On

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

This is okay. Little Laura Ingalls right here with us today.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Right.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

about some floral design stuff. How about that? Some myths

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Tell us what you want us to

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, I think the first one that I'm, and I know I've heard all three of us say this to customers in the store, or people making arrangements that, you know, it's about that there are design rules and that you're supposed to follow them and, you know, Dwayne calls me the ultimate real follower because I usually am a real follower. although I like to blow up whenever I can. Um, but I've always tried to say know the rules and then know how they work and why they work and then break them when you want, like, just break them because like, for example, using, you have to use odd numbers. Well, no, there are certain times, right? Where I know, right? There are certain times where, if you don't, if you may not have your natural style, you may not, you don't have it innate in you, like what feels right, what looks right. That's a good place to start. Right. But don't feel chained to the idea that you have to have three of something or five of something in an arrangement or in a, in a vessel so that you're following the rules, like that's just complete nonsense, because I know a number of times I've put like two of something in one and it looks balanced and looks perfect and you know, whatever. And then someone will say, do you need another one? So there's three, so there's odd. And I was like, no, it looks right. It looks fine. It's beautiful. So don't, I think for me. Know that those, those kinds of elements exist for a guideline. And again, once you understand guidelines and understand why, when it's all about balance and proportion and all those kinds of things, then screw it and do what feels right. I mean, it. shouldn't look, it. shouldn't look like a hairstyle from Fraggle Rock once you're done, but you know, it should, it should, you know, it should feel right for you. And that's, that's always drives me crazy. Uh

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I always, um, think, Wow, I guess there's an audience of 35 and younger that thinks flower arrangements are for your granny's house and you're right and Then when we have an opportunity to work with somebody of a younger age They go. Oh, well, it looks real. I was like, yeah. Yeah Quit buying shit for XXXXXX and XXXXX XXXXX, you know And you you're getting teal colored peonies the size of somebody's head because you know, that's what people want Nature gives you if you buy pretty things and we do pretty flowers, uh, that you'll realize, Oh, that, that looks real in the idea of like what you always do, Jeremy, you'll, you'll say you like, you, you like to just gather and you like to get arrangements and you're going outside and the idea is like you're cutting from the garden and you just. Plop three or thrive or seven or 12 or something in the vase. And it just is that simple. And that's what we've adapted to. I think that's some of the reasons, uh, our flower arrangements and what I do and you do and Joe does and everybody else is we try to make arrangements that look gathered and you don't put a flower here and a flower here and a flower here and follow the formula. Uh, I, a lot of times I'll make an arrangement and if I don't have guidance and they don't care, I'll do. Clusters of flowers. And I don't have it like just one spatter throughout, right? And that's what makes it feel, I'll say on trend, not trendy. That's different on trend and current and gathered. And that's how you take silk, Chinese flowers that are very good, by the way, very good ones, and we make it look real because, um, I think our arrangements are some of the best out there and I'm not being cocky, I really do believe that.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I agree. I think there's some really pretty ones. And you know, I should have mentioned this before with, um, a lot of times people when they hear, like, they'll read a design rule and they'll like stick to it. Like, you know, carry it close to their chest because again, they don't know. We have a blog or a blog on the website that I'll put down in the, in the show notes. And, yeah. It is a, it's basically a formula. If you don't know what you're doing as far as like what flowers to combine, right, or what stems to combine, it kind of walks you through, okay, this is how it breaks down. And if you put these kind of elements together, um, it, you know, nine times out of ten, it's, it's the perfect combination. So I'll make sure to put that down there. And it's just a good little general rule just to be like, okay, knowing how much to mix and how much, how much not to mix. Cause. We all know we've seen people that brought up 300 worth of flowers to make an arrangement that's going to go in a 5x5, you know, container. Um, and then we've also seen somebody bring up two stems that's trying to make something that's going to go in a 36 inch container. So, um, knowing the elements of what to mix and how much will help you, I think. So I'll put that down in the show notes. That's really helpful.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

One thing I'll circle back to is if you want to try and make an arrangement on your own, and this is not your skill set, just buy massed out something, right? Right now we're getting ready for fall, buy six, I won't even do an odd number, do six sunflowers and stick it in your vase, right? Or six brownie mossy green hydrangeas. And I'm okay with that. Like I'd rather that than you just mix a hot mess together. Cause I love that little, just bundle. You bought a bouquet and just dropped it in a

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

right. Repetition. It's just repetition. Just like

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Repetition.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

buy that bundle of sunflowers from Trader Joe's. It's the same thing. So it's just gonna

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Mm hmm. Mm hmm.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

and not the weekend. So,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You got it. Yeah. Just take that and run with it.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

this brings me to my ick, and it's, one of the things that frustrates me to no end on, social media, whatever it is, and, you know, people are always excited to share, something that they've learned, with others because they are just so excited to tell somebody else. The problem is when. What they're sharing is complete and utterly fucking wrong. Right? So this.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

of Like pictures of

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

What I am specifically talking about, and there's, there's more

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Let's see your half eaten pork chop.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Okay. So when we are making a fresh flower arrangement, if it is going in a glass container, a clear glass cube, we can use multiple things to try to hold the stems in place, but an old florist hack. Okay. And I won't even say a hack. It's just a tool was a clear strapping tape that you used on the top of the piece of glass. That you can create a grid structure. You can make like a tic tac toe, right? Or you could even increase it more to make it. It was, so it was more than just nine spots and you could put a piece around the very top, to really hold everything in. It's got a special adhesive. It works pretty well when it's wet. It's clear. You can see through it. Once you put stems in it, you will never see it. Okay. So that's the base of what the real tip is right using clear floral tape to do this what I kept seeing on instagram and tiktok were people taking clear Scotch tape and putting that on the top of the face And trying to then put flowers inside. Okay, here's the deal That tape does not unless you get like the steel reinforced kind of wrap a gift it first of all It's not going to keep it warm Right. The second it's going to get wet,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

It's done.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

it gives, right. It is, it's gone. It's gone. And so I saw time after time after time of people taking this Scotch tape, trying to make a grip. First of all, also how wide is the Scotch tape? It's like three quarters of an inch wide. Like, you know, it's big. Right? So now they've, Gummed up the top of their container, trying to put this grid structure in. And so then I see all these people trying to use it, showing how well it works. And they get six stems in and the entire grid starts giving away and it collapses on itself. And of course, now they've started taking a time lapse video. So they just keep continuing to finish it. And I get this a great tip. I'm like, No. this, it's, it's like, oh my God. So that, that's my, that's mine. I don't, it just, I don't,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

And what do you, where do you watch these fools at

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

On TikTok

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

on social. The people share it on socials, like, you know, here's a tip. Um, and,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

that's the difference between you

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

followed by

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I just scroll past those things. Yes, because I'm like,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

chop.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

you know how I've said about people that I hate the person that's the smartest person in the room. Right. And I'm a collaborator and I want to work together. I can almost assure you 90 percent of the time I'm going to scroll past because I know that I'm smarter than 90 percent of those dumb asses making stupid videos on TikTok and whatever it is. I just keep on scrolling like no. I am old and hateful. I can teach you more than you will ever know. Next!

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

well, that's, and that's the frustrating part for me is that people have put the time together to put this out there. And the thing is, is they don't know. And you know, the reason why they are doing it is because they've seen somebody else do it. Right? They've seen somebody else use Scotch Tape and they're like, Oh, that's a great tip. I'm going to share it with my peeps. Right? And then

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You know, it's like history repeating itself

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Oh, God.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

ha ha.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Read a book. Quit banning a book. Read a book.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I mean, just do some real research. Like, take a second and Google. I mean, Lord have mercy. It's just

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I wouldn't call that an ick. I'd call that stupidity. But that's okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

So the ick is more people sharing things that I just that you know are just like,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Wrong.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

So wrong. And like, I saw one one time where the hydrangeas they bought. At, the grocery store or whatever, they got him home and They didn't cut fresh ends on the ends. And so they were really like, they, they wilted. Right. And then they were like, let me teach you a trick. Spray hairspray.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

there. Here's your opportunity to tell people really what to do.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I am. I'm going to tell them.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

okay, okay, I'm

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah. So they're like, let me show you a trick. Take hairspray and spray it on water and then submerge, submerge your hydrangea head and it will fix it. And I'm like, the hairspray is not necessary. Like there's no need for hairspray in this. Literally. You cut the end, get a fresh tip on it, and then submerge the, the poor wilted thing into your kitchen sink, leave it, you can leave it overnight, come back the next day, it's fine. It will be perfectly plump and beautiful. Where the hell did hairspray come in? Like, did Vidal Sassoon try to sell, they're just trying to sell more hairspray?

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

a hydrangea, for example. It's like a straw, right? It's

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

They

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

it's a woodsy straw. It's a straw. And if you, If, if it's sealed, right, it doesn't easily absorb the water, but if you cut it off, the little tip of it, it reopens the pores, the stem, and it pulls the water into it, and therefore it gets to the head of the flower and it plumps it up. This is just not that hard to figure out. And.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

reason why you submerge it. Like, it will, they'll, they'll absorb water in through that way. No hairspray is needed. Save your Tresemme. I just, I don't know. It just, it just amazes me every day what I've seen. Um,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

move

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Okay, one

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You ready? One more. Okay. Everything must match.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I have that written down on my thing.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Okay, so they say interior designer myths include matching everything. The notion that everything in a room must match perfectly is a myth that stifles creativity. Interior design is about creating harmony, harmony, and balance, not uniformity. Skilled designers know how to mix styles, textures, and colors to achieve a visually appealing and cohesive look. A well curated, Mix of elements adds character and personality to a space. Hmm. Curated. Hear that word, kids. We've said this a thousand times. A room doesn't happen overnight. It evolves. A house keeps growing and you keep adding. You keep tweaking and you keep moving. Quit buying stuff all the time. What you bought, you love. If it's in the living room, move it to the dining room. What's in the dining room? Move it to the bedroom. Keep shopping in your house. You don't quit buying crap all the time. Buy what you love and buy it from us. Cause we do get flowers. But then the best, I always say, um, mine is I don't want to broil your moment. Right. I don't, I don't want you to go in and buy the whole bedroom set. I just hate everything about that. Hate. What you got for me boys? What do you think?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Mix and match. Yeah, no, I mean, that, when we were, when you were reading that, I was thinking, I was like, okay, my front sitting room. Like I can count nine different patterns in there, not including the artwork right now, but it

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

So anything in your front living room, did you buy any one thing at the two things rather at the same time? Or is everything you've acquired and found at different times in your life?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

the only thing I bought at the same time were two lamps and two mirrors. Cause I needed them to mirror image on the wall. Other than that, everything else in there is from, my first house, there's things from my parents house. There's two things from my grandparents house. So yeah, it's a very collected room. Curated, as you say.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

And that's why I love that room, right? I don't, I didn't know why, the color first is stunning. That color, you're so good at color. And that color in that front living room is a stunning color. Um, but I always look at that room and I wonder why. it just looks rich. Well, it's because it evolved. It's curated. And it happened over time.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah. That was a whole

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I read,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I read into what you read, Dwayne, even further than, you know, collecting pieces at different times, from different places. Even if it's at the same time, if you get it from different places, right? Like, you've mixed and matched. What I hear in that is, not all your metal finishes need to

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

No.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You don't have to do matchy matchy furniture. You don't have to do matchy matchy fabrics. Everything doesn't have to be the same. Introducing colors and textures and patterns can make it really interesting. And can add a ton of depth to a space. Um, and that's just by you finding that fun pillow that you found at a vintage store that has this

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, tell us, I was at Jeremy's house a couple of weeks ago. We were getting ready to go out of town. Uh, would you like to share with the audience the pillow that you felt em, emboldened and necessary to show me? Now it was a gift. It was a gift, but the one thing that he had to point out to show me that he had to show me, uh, this new pillow or this pillow he got for a gift at Christmastime on the bench in the front living room. It has words printed on it. Um,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

It just has a nice little word knitted in it. It's all tone on tone. So it's very tastefully done. It's in cream. Uh, And it's just a fun little, um, you know the, yeah, it's a fun job. Well, the, I didn't tell you this was a gift from my friend's mother for Christmas.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, I look at the pillow and I go, well, hi, look at that. I just didn't know that was even something that existed in the world or needed to exist in the world, by the way.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, I walked, uh, when I went in the room one day and it was kind of turned over and I was like, And I thought, you know, maybe Gracie had got up and knocked it over. I was like, why is this pillow knocked over? He goes, because my mom is coming over. And I thought maybe I wouldn't greet her right inside the door with that. And I was like, oh, okay,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

my God.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

It's just there, you know, whatever.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

There was a house that I did a number of years ago and they were, having a party and the guy collected, art and funky, funky, funky art. And, they, and I didn't realize this was part of an art installation. So there's these three pegs out in the foyer and it had, was it horse bridles? Is that the thing that's right? And they had the, the, uh, And it had the brass name plates, you know, very Kentucky something. And I really, I was like, this house is downtown, so it's not on the farm. But I thought, you know, maybe he had the horses or something. And so, we getting ready for the people to come. And, I'm standing there reading the names on the, plates. And, uh, the first plate says, And I went, uh, that's, that's odd. And then the second plate said xxxxxxxxx or something like that. And I went, well, that's very odd. And then the third one xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. And I went, oh dear Lord, no. And so I went to the party coordinator and I said, Jan, come, come and read these. And she's like, uh huh. Uh huh. And then she went. Huh. Oh Lord. I said, uh huh. And she said, I think I'm going to take those down and just store those away before the company comes. And I said, that might be a good idea. That was a very unusual art installation. I have to say,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

You know what? Whatever floats your about when it comes to

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

whatever floats your boat.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Whatever

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

we learn from this today today? What did we learn from today?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Do what you want to do.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

do that that rules can be helpful.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

They can be guidelines.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

They can, they can be really good luck guidelines. However, do your research understand why these things are said, and then be open enough to realize what works for you and do that. And if you need help, ask for help. And don't be

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

stupid.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Well, I won't say TikTok's stupid. Just take 10 seconds to Google it. Jeez.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

Save your hairspray. Hairspray's expensive. Dwayne, I know you haven't bought any in a while, but it is expensive.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

no, no.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I used to buy one and it was

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653:

I haven't had to buy a product in years.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653:

it was like over 20 a can. And I'm like, I've got too much hair to do this. As always, thank you all for listening. We'll be back next Wednesday with a new podcast. If you have any ideas or thoughts, please feel free to call or text
