S1:E27 Our Friend, Barrett
In this episode we chat with Barrett Hudkins, a fellow interior designer about how she transplanted herself from Baton Rouge, to our home of Lexington, KY and some design wisdom she picked up along the way from not only her parents, but through employers. Our favorite quote is when she quotes her mom with "season your words well"....LOVE THIS.

Ay,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:he was snippy. So Jeremy was snippy with me, Barrett, yesterday. And he was, it was like lots of things on my plate today. I just have too much. And I'm like, okay, well, you're the one that's wanting to build the empire, not me. So again, if I'm, you know, I'm here a couple days a week, I'm doing the best I can. So he, uh, I
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:to cash the check.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:was gonna say he's planning the pink gravel driveway all the time,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah. Well I just want to check. And so he laments over not having, um, lunch until four o'clock. We are like, gosh, that is a terribly late lunch. No, it's not. I am on the fasting program of what I eat from 11 to seven, so it's 1107 here at the store I need to eat. Right. Well, I have given up on ever doing a group meal'cause I could wait till 12, 12 30 if I needed to. Right. These fools will start thinking about having lunch at 1 15 2 o'clock and it gets here at 3 o'clock, right? So when he says I didn't eat to homework, I was like you don't eat to 3 37 every day Anyway, I don't understand what that little is that little 20 minute hangry window puts you
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:It's not that late. It's usually somewhere around 2. It's somewhere at 2. I realize it's later than most, but you know, I don't eat
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:at dinner at night?
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, last night I didn't eat until after we got home from the live sale, so it was 8, 8. 45?
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:You are european, aren't
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, that's much later than normal. Usually one of us will start cooking. Okay,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:What time do you eat?
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:6 30.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:around 9, 30, or
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Oh, my God.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Sorry.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Okay, we're done with you. Okay, let's move on.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Okay, for the listening audience, who are we talking to today? And Stuart's there, too. Say hello, Stuart.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:It's not working.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Is it? It was on mute.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:hello. There you go.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Ha
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:It was muted.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:there you
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Then all those comments
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:can only see his
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Then all those comments I was saying you couldn't hear. Fuck.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:No, you're just
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:No, we couldn't hear anything.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:anything. So let's, uh, let's introduce Barrett, Jeremy. Let's let's who's, who's this
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, you know, I'm probably not the best person to do this because you're going to love this intro Barrett. I don't even know what your last name really is. I have it in three different ways in my phone. Barrett is a designer friend that, I mean, when I remember meeting Barrett originally was because of her work at a retail store. Um, but I, like, this is where it's kind of hazy. She's been there and I don't know how we met her. So I'm not the person to do this. All I do know is that I do love Barrett as well as so many other customers do. Because anytime her name comes up with a customer, they're like, Oh, don't you just love her? And I'm like, yeah, yeah. Don't know what her last name is, but yeah, I love her.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So, it's funny, I have three last names. Barrett is the last name, but that's my first name. Actually my second, but anyway, Barrett Campbell is what my name was when I moved to Kentucky. So a lot of people know me as that. And then I got married and I was Hudkins and now I'm divorced. So, but on my business card, it says Barrett Campbell, Hudkins. So another friend used to tease me that it looks like a law
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:So you're so you're kind of like JD Vance that changed your name so many times.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Not in the least.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, cause I always got, I always got so confused when it was, cause I didn't know if it was Hudkins, Hodgkins, um, or I think I had somebody else wants to say Huckins. And I'm like, you know what? It's Barrett.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:hard time. And when I did an Airbnb house for a client and it was written up in the, um, newspaper as Barrett Hudson. And I was like, Oh, Okay,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Okay, we'll
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Wait, wait a fact check it But anyway, no, I just. Just Barrett. I'm going to become just the one word name. It's weird enough. Everybody knows who you're talking about. So you don't really need my last name.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Okay, so let's talk about the weirdness name. Where'd this come from?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:It was my grandmother's maiden name on my dad's side.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:see, there's a great history to it then.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:yeah, I love it now. I hated it in the third grade, but
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:well, yeah, that's a freak name in third grade. Drinky
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:for sure, everybody was Amy and Jennifer and I was Barrett.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:you know, you think back about all those bitches back in elementary
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:look at that little boy. Did you have short hair when you were a little girl? But you were a little boy when you were then?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So I did, there was a moment where I had a page boy. It was not a good look. Uh, but, but my hair was
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:You really mess with the children, or the teachers, don't you? Yeah.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I mean, Well, my first, my legal first name is Jan and I've never gone by Jan, but my mom wanted me to be named for my aunt and my grandmother. So Barrett Jan sounded stupid. So Jan Barrett, if I was a girl, it's going to be Jan Barrett. If I was a boy, it's going to be John Barrett, but they were going to go by Barrett. Either way.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, I love Barrett. I love, I love the name.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Thank you. I love, it now. Yeah. it's nice to have a unique name doing what I
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:you're a transplant, right? You've been dropped into Lexington now. You've been here a long time at this point.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. This is the year that is the tiebreaker where I've been here now longer than I was in Baton Rouge, but I grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Okay, go Tell us about that life.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:was really hot. It's really humid, but, um, I didn't know until I left, but Louisiana is unusual in a few different ways. I mean, our. Culture is, um, very infused with French and Cajun. And, um, it's kind of a melting pot from way back. Um, very Southern, very steeped in that tradition as well. So what we like to do in Louisiana is feed people. Eat talk about food. Um, have a good time. Like it's it's very what I didn't realize until I left there. It's very laid back. Like, nobody takes themselves very seriously there. Um, and I realized. Once I left Louisiana, that that was a unique thing about it that I, that that's one of the things I miss. People don't get real uptight about much of anything. And that's 1 of the things that I kind of feel like I took with me from there. I don't, I don't worry too much about the small stuff. And if everybody comes over and eats at my house. And has a good time. It's been a good day.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:It sounds like a day to me.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. I like to feed everybody.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:What we gonna have? What do you like to cook? I didn't know that you were from Louisiana.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. I love to cook. Um, I mean, the first cold spell, I will always be back here making gumbo. Yeah. Yeah. Sophie, when she went to school, the first cold weekend, um, When she was at center and it was 2020. So like they were all kind of locked down there and she couldn't leave. And it got chilly at night. She texted me and she's like, I know you're making gumbo and I want it so bad. I was literally stirring the room and she texted me that. So the next day we drove it down there and left it on the dorm doorstep, like, you know, contraband.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:It's so I mean forgive the ignorance on this one, but is gumbo it's not the it's not the same So don't misunderstand what I'm saying But is gumbo kind of like the chili of a Louisiana like if that cuz you know here when we gets cold people either want To make at least my mom anyway vegetable soup Or chili. Like that's, that's where she goes.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yes, that is, it's the go to first cold snap, put on a sweater and make some gumbo for sure. But no, it's, it is what my body just starts chopping onions.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:I don't I don't know what's in gumbo. I don't know if I've even had gumbo. I
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:the, the critical thing for gumbo is okra and gumbo is the African word for okra. That's why that's
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Oh, I did not know that yet. Look at us learning something else today.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Hey, look at that's being all smart
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I got all the trivia. If there, if trivia was something you could graduate for, I would have done that. I, I love the not, I love the little facts.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:we having us a good life down in button Rouge You have to say it that way. She said it a certain way. It's like, it's like, like Louisville, right? She said, I can't say it, but Baton Rouge,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Just Baton Rouge.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, it does not sound weird when she says it, Dwayne. I don't know what you're
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:You don't hear Baton
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, the funny thing is when you say you're from Baton Rouge, everybody goes, oh, Baton Rouge. I'm like, yup.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Also, every time I see Martina go, weewee. She doesn't like me anymore, though. Yeah, no, no, she does. She loves
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, but the same, the follow up to that is you also say anything to someone who lives in Chicago, something about Oprah. It's like whatever you can grasp onto.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:yeah.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Dwayne likes a go to. He likes a one liner.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:So, we've been here for, I don't know, 30 years, and you lived in Baton Rouge for 30 years. Is that
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I'm not 60 shit, Dwayne.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:going to say, she's up and
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:old do you think I am? Damn. Um, no, this year is, um, well, I've been here 25 and they're 25.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Okay, so, so, what makes you pack up your bags and leave this Southern enclave of specificity to land in Lexington of all places. Right.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:so after LSU, I was working for an interior designer in Baton Rouge, who was really my mentor. She was in the antiques business and she was at the part of her career where she had scaled back. She could pick and choose anything and we were doing just extraordinary work and at the very, very highest level as far as like, you know, the governor's mansion and an antebellum home and, um, a train car and a winery and like, really cool stuff for people who really let her do whatever she wanted. So it was really a taste of. This is what your future could be like one day. Well, it's 22. Wasn't going to be like that anytime soon. And when she would have retired, there was no way on earth her clients would be like, Oh, I'm going to go from this to her 22 year old trainee. That would have been ridiculous. So I knew I couldn't take that over, but I also didn't want to stay. In a town that was very saturated with what I, you know, with designers, and I was just ready to see something different. I lived in Seattle for a summer and I loved getting out and seeing how the rest of the world worked. I love to travel and see different places. And anyway, I was, um, I was engaged or about to be engaged and. Neither of us really wanted to stay in Baton Rouge. So it was like, well, his sister was here in graduate school. My sister was in St. Louis and, um, we were like, well, let's just see who gets dropped first and go there and see what it's like. And he had gone to UK. Um, so we came up here and I loved Lexington. I mean, Lexington felt so much like Baton Rouge did when I was a kid. It's a big, small town and You could just tell that it was a community. And, um, I love that about where I'm from is not like that anymore, but it was when I was growing up, uh, Katrina really changed it a lot. Um, but Lexington really felt that small enough to where, you know, people and big enough to where there's stuff to do. And I knew it would be a great place to raise my kids. It was also close enough to St. Louis, where my sister lives so that, you know, We could get our kids together one day, which we did. Um, we grew up down the street from my grandparents. So it was really hard to decide to just leave.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:to just jet. but
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:But we wanted something different than what Baton Rouge had to offer both of us. So we ended up going farther afield and I just love it here. It's been a wonderful place to raise my children and kind of never looked back.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I was. No, I think
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:What? What do you want?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Y'all got real quiet. Was that a surprise?
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:we were waiting for one of us to say something. And then Dwayne moved his mouth and there was no sound. Waiting.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:rare occasion.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:I, I, I want Stuart to ask you some, uh, he's got three questions for you. Go ahead and start with your first question.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Stewart's eyeballs
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. Uh, I was, I was not prepped for this podcast, so I do, I do not have three full
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, Barry, so
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:I do have a question.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Where were you before our house?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So I worked when I first moved to Kentucky for my, uh, Martin Darkoel, which
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yes, in Danville. Mary Cynthia Knowles.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Cynthia. Mary Cynthia No, of course. Shout out to Mary Cynthia. Mm
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:sure y'all saw her at market. I never get to see her, but I love her. We had so much fun in those early days. And I lived here and I worked there. So I did the reverse commute. Um, And I would, you know, I'd drink my coffee, listen to the news, get to work. It was such a wonderful, welcoming family to work for. And Joe had been doing that forever. And I had no idea about central Kentucky. I didn't know what Berea was. I didn't, you know, all these places. Well, because they were a small firm in Danville. We went all over the place. So they'd be like, Hey, you're going to paint lit today. What? You know, and, and I, I just hop in the van and go, um, and got to meet some really wonderful people. And that was fun because where I worked before, you know, the desk I sat at, I was scared to put my coffee cup down because the desk was like a 15, 000. 18th century burl. It was beautiful, but I couldn't shop there. I was 20, you know, so going somewhere that had kind of quote unquote normal people as clients was really good for me and I learned a lot about. Design isn't always about just spending a lot of money. And the way that Nell, the mentor that I worked for, that's not how she did it either, even at that highest end. It was, she was the tightest thing ever. Um, so it was, it was a real lesson in that, you know, design isn't always just about your budget at this point. About making the right choices and, uh, proportions, you know, that kind of
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Mm. hmm. Mm
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So I worked for them for several years and then some stuff happened. Mike got in a really bad wreck and, um, I had to take his job over. And then I found out I was with child and, um, I found out at work at Mary Cynthia's because it's a whole long
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:the, the husband had the wreck and he's broken, but yet he can reproduce?
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, could have done that before,
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:was broken.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Actually, it wasn't.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:See? he had, he had time on his hands and he's like, I'll just
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Listen, that time was not on his hands. It was on something else.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Well, I don't know about
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:That is a new meaning to home health care.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:We just got an explicit warning. There you go.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:all I can tell you.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:you, baby. Let me
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:there was, there was no Netflix then. There wasn't a lot to do during the day. There was
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:You took advantage of this poor broken man's legs and arms, didn't you? You
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:that was, that was the story. I don't, that's the story. Um, but I got a sweet, sweet baby girl out of it. And, um,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:And Sweet Baby Girl, for all disclosure, Sweet Baby Girl works with us. And she has been a blessing. She really has been. That's what we were talking about prior to this, uh, that, uh, Sophie is, um, good and good, and I want to pivot to, I, I think you don't realize there's some sameness there, maybe you do, but you know, this wonderlust, and if I get it right, that she wants to travel and save some money and go, uh, explore a little, right? That sounds like that was you at that age. And there's a, there's a sameness there. Yeah. Yeah. I thought that was, I was like, Oh, I wonder if she's, I wonder if mama sees that the sameness in that.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:we have a lot of sameness in a lot of ways. Um, and there's definitely differences. I'm an extrovert. She's an introvert, but, um, we love travel. We love language and words and, um, you know, she speaks beautiful other languages better than I do, but we both really,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:words in other languages. She is.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:we, we, we share that potty mouth. That's a family trait, by the way. My
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Anybody know what marred means?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:that's a.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Dwayne.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:in French.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Mm
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah. There you go.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, it's the only one he's got, Barret.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:let him have it. let him
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:all I got. That's all I got. Wee wee wee. We a curse word in French.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:No.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So the, um, yes, we share all those things.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Wee wee does not mean penis, Dwayne. Ha ha ha ha ha.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I should text my friend and see what does.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah. Get, uh, Carl on here. Yeah, let's
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. Right.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:And he's,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:so yeah,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:has a, BFF, uh, Carl who is, is from France, who's is quintessential European, right. He looks French, acts French, you know, he's like, what's that mean? But he just, he is like, he just, he just starts talking and acting and he walked in the room and was like, oh, that's a French dude, right?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, He doesn't really have to say anything for you to know,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:you know exactly he just has that aura about him in a good way not not in a ugly way in a good way
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:no, it's funny to work with somebody and design that, um, it doesn't matter what he says. It's a good thing he's good at it because if he wasn't, people would just do whatever he says anyway.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:It's like, it sounds so right.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Okay, Carl's like okay, whatever
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Whatever
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I think we, I think we, kind of live the same life. Like, we can, um, say a lot of things that other people probably couldn't say in some circles or even with people. And just because people love us, we get away with it. I mean, there's, there's, there's, well, I know I do.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah, okay.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:think
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:mean, there is a sense of privilege of that, but you
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:love you, Jeremy. I'm not being ugly. They
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Oh, I know. Oh, I know they do.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:All of you all, you say, when you, you said that about me, it's the truth. Like, oh, you're working with them. Oh my God. There's so much fun. And it's the truth. I mean, we have a really fun group of designers and there's some that aren't, I guess, but there are some really
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:an odd segue, but let's tell this. This is about love and it has nothing to do with Barrett and who we're talking about. But there was a person that just came in and she's, you know, mid seventies and um, she watched our live stream. Last night we, um, did, um, a
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:The live sale, When
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:husband who is 77 today. It's his birthday, Larry to watch it. And she said, Larry didn't care less. He trying to watch the Olympics and I got the phone and she said, honey, you turned the Olympics off and started watching you all. True story. And he said, you all are hilarious. It gave, he literally laughed out loud. He had so much fun. And so then it's, so what a beautiful story, right? But then, uh, it's like I said, what do you guys,'cause they live not in paint lick, but they live a couple hours away. So they came in on the state last night and his birthday. Well, he is a veteran and he was, um, is it the Vietnam War? Like your dad was in Jeremy and Agent Orange. Yeah. So he, uh, is suffering from Agent Orange and he has leukemia and there's common threads
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Very common. Yeah.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:very common and they can't do surgery on his knee because of the Agent Orange. And so now he's walking on two canes because of the Agent Orange and the leukemia. And I only pivot to that. First we had this fun story and I'm not trying to bring it down, but it's the idea of those who serve for us and love this country. They deserve our respect and that just was humbling to, first we found, we found joy for Larry who was in pain because he can't walk easily, but it also is the, that, um, the respect that we need to give to all those out there once it's all said and done. So it's a little shout out to our veterans in a weird
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:I mean, I understand and agree with that, but I don't know how that segue fucking ended up in this segment.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Me either.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:I'm just like, I'm like, wait a minute. How does this loop back to Barret and her French friend?
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:what, Barrett, Barrett was, um, was your dad in any armed services?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yes, he was in the military, in the army.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:talk. See, we're going to talk about your sweet
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:He is digging.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:reached, you pulled, you dug real deep.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:what if I'd have said no, he was a pacifist?
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:this is why Barbara Walters, is good at her job. Right? I am the Barbara of this podcast
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I do want to point out that this is the second time. You may have not heard the first time, Bear, but Dwayne interrupts somebody in the story. He says, Oh, I want to tell you about something not to try to bring it down. And then proceeds to tell us about the
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:I know. And we're like, where the hell did this come from? Where is this coming from?
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Well,
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, let's, let's talk about.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:is, I do think it is a shame that our country doesn't
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, I do too.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:damn, I don't know
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:I do too, but I think Dwayne's sugar is low.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:No, it was a conversation just before I walked in here and started talking to the podcast. So it's, you know, it's on me. It's garbage to the mouth and I'm going to say it. It's not my story to tell,
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, while we have, while we have Barrett, who is a very talented designer, let's talk about some design stuff.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:You know what I want to know
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I think,
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Since, since I'm supposed to ask three questions.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:yeah, go ahead.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:I want to know about how you came about To a particular client that I only know very little of. But you had to basically put slabs of marble floor down. Real slick marble.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. Dwayne helped me with that. Sissy Faulkner brought me that job,
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:oh, so okay. You weren't the sissy was the designer. You were at the fluffer. Yeah.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Sissy was the, yeah, she did the selections and then I helped her help them with furniture through one of my jobs. I have two full time jobs, ask me about either.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:this is an interesting thing because we talked about on here how every designer is different, every customer is different, every need is different, right? And we've discussed that, each is approached differently. Separately, there are different levels as far as some people just want to pick out finishes, some people just want to do furniture, some people want to do every accessory, throw tchotchke thing in the house. You're, you're the furniture, right? Like, that's what you really enjoy to do. Is that, is that true?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:with my retail job, that is my focus. Yes. so I have my own business that I started when I was home with Sophie when she was little, a little bit before she was born actually, because I, I couldn't go back to Martin Durer with everything that was going on. So I started my own business, did just sort of freelance, design work, have continued to do that. In my own business. So in that business, I help people build, I pick selections. I love, love to remodel or design space. that was something that I didn't realize until a little bit later in my career, but fixing the problems of the floor plan is really a passion I have that I just didn't realize would be its own thing. So I love to fix a floor plan, lay space out. so I do that a lot and then I also have a job where I do the furniture, which allows me to be in a store environment, which also really fills another bucket for me. I love both of those things I've tried over the years to give up either or, but I need both to feel like I'm doing the kind of work I love. Some of it's short term, some of it's more of the long game and I, if I'm doing all In either direction, I get sad.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:With that
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I have to, I, have to have a little architecture project and a little furniture going
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:well Barrett and I have more of a connection than the other two guys, but there's a reason I say that. Once it's all said and done, you're most unlike me, and you're really most like Stuart. That I always see Stuart as this strong architectural background in creating the spaces, and I can't see that. That is right, I can't see it, I don't understand it, you giving the space.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:you do such a phenomenal job at getting the accessories Right. which I know when they're wrong. And I can do it, but it's like pulling hair. I can't, I just, please, Dwayne. And I've called him and been like, I can't think about this bookshelf and get, can you just get over here and do your thing?
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Well, how she, how I remember, um, you ask how in all of her lives, how I really remember her being in my life was she was doing a job for, and it might've been more, but this is what gets stuck with me and she was, uh, houses being built and she worked on the plans and she helped, um, design the kitchen. And, uh, I don't want to overstep this, but you're an integral part of the layout. I think you switched a
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I was there. Yeah. I was there before they even started breaking ground. And what we found out when I had a first meeting with them was that they thought they were getting something that they weren't. They thought they were getting a two story family room. And I was like, well, that's not, that's not what we're getting. What these blueprints say, so let's fix it. Um, so I redrew the upstairs and then I also redlined with the draftsman, the first floor and changed some passage routes through pantries and stuff just to make it better. And so yeah, I was on the ground with that house for two years before we even could think about accessories. And by then, you just kind of, you hit a place where you're, you can't think about that house anymore.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:I feel like Barrett's an odd bird. Okay. In that most designers, if they're going to be at the groundwork of the piece of property of the brick, they're all the way in and they're selfish and they're self serving and they're going to be there to the last piece of soap. It is my world. This is my house for my client. No, no, no. I've seen a lot of that truthfully. Right. And you are not that at all. Right. And I'm not that, and Jeremy's not that, and Stuart's not that, but there are a lot out there that are very protective of their vision, right? It's like, come on guys. It's a, it's, it's a team effort. It's nobody's one house. So I pivot to say that is because you came to me probably closer to the end of the project And you said, this is almost finished. And I really didn't know you well, I really didn't. And, uh, you said, when this gets done, I've got the furniture ordered. I want you to come and put all the stuff in the house and finish it up. And I didn't dismiss you, but also went, yeah, yeah, whatever. You know, I just didn't think much about it. Right. Because most designers just, that's not the norm. I'm just telling you. Right. So when the house. Came to be built and it came to fruition by George's. You're calling me saying, oh, and actually you came in the store you introduced us. And she trusted you at that point implicitly because you had saved. This project for them and made it perfect. And if I misspeak, you tell me, but now that the house is finished and the furniture's in it to bring this other random person in to finish it up was also foreign I think. And she's like, Oh, I don't understand. So there was definitely an uncomfort, not personally. It's just, she just trusted you.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Right.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:And so what I had to do was put her at ease and say, no, no, no, I'm just going to load the van up with what I think is perfect. I'll bring it out there and Barrett can be there. I'm not trying to control it. We'll sit in the bookcases and then I'll drive away. And what you don't want, you all love it. Fine. You want to keep it all fine. Just bring it. Back right and then you pay for what you keep Once we got it all installed that day, right? She's like, oh she kept it all and that's when I knew you You were champion me and but you ultimately were Really? It was about The client's best interest. Well, who, who is the best person to put this into play to get this perfect for them? And that's, for me, that's taking your ego out of it where many people can't. And that's when I considered you to be a friend because I knew I could trust you. And I knew that. This was a person that's all she's ultimately trying to do is the best thing for the people in her life. Ooh,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, and I'm, I don't know about y'all, but I'm really fueled by collaboration. I'm inspired by other designers. That's the best thing about the role I play at the store where I work is that I also get to collaborate with these fabulous designers that are building all kinds of different things. And, a lot of times people who are very insulated from other, like that have their own firm that do everything in house. They must have lots of people that inspire them, that they can kind of riff off of. I just, I love the energy, the creative energy of working And bouncing ideas off of other people. And I had so much fun doing that job and others with you. And I just, there are things. And I don't know, is this the, the gift of getting older is it's like, I know what I'm good at and I know what I'm not and I'm bringing in, I'm bringing in the pro, you know, I'm, I'm here to make the project look, look amazing. And that particular project, uh, collaborated with a cabinet designer who was very. But just fun to work with and talented and then the clients were just game. Like we would, I remember sitting in the cabinet meeting and it was like, Ooh, and we could do this. Oh yeah. And then what if the cabinet top was glass? And what if the watch winders moved? And like all this crazy creative stuff that you just don't get to do on every project. And it was almost like leveling up every time we'd come up with an idea and it just kept getting better and better. And when I got to the part of the project where it's accessories, I remember being like, well, I know they have so much at the store that would work. And I know that that's just not where my gift is anymore. I, I used to maybe could focus like that, but I've developed a little late stage ADHD thinking about my dotage. And I just, I love to knock a wall down and I love to make the space change for the better and the function work better. But when it starts to get into the picture frames, I just sort of run out of steam and I have to call in Dwayne or James Snowden, who's helped me, all these other, Len
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:talk about, I like to knock a wall down. Well, you know, normally I'd pivot to Stuart, but there's something that was going on in his life. And anyway, I didn't think, I thought, here's the ego for me. I thought I had it figured out. Look at me. And, you know, I've just said it about 2, 000 times. I can't do layouts and I'm not good at this, yet I'm doing the layout in my basement, taking this raw space, and I think I know what's, where the kitchen's gonna go. And I don't know what the lay of the conversation, but I show Barrett like a picture of it. She's like, yeah, no, no, that's not good. I was like, oh, okay. She's
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:say it like that. I just said that shouldn't be where the kitchen is.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:and I was like, I don't know, you know, so I'm going, I'm pushing back. I was like, I don't know, I don't really see it. She said, how about I just drive over on Saturday? I'll just get out of the house and drive over and just look at it. And I was like, okay, if you want to waste your time. And she comes over there and she's like, you need to do this. And the kitchen needs to go over here. The kitchen doesn't go here. And the kitchen was like, are you sure? And she's like, yeah. Yeah, I was like, okay, we're going to do it. So we start building this and I'm starting to love it. And then there's an opening between the kitchen and the family room area. And it, what's it like a three foot opening maybe? And you
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, it was about a two and a half foot opening and it needed to be about 10.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, uh, she said, you need to open this up. So I got the quote and it meant, you know, low bearing beams and a couple, several thousand dollars, and I was like, Oh, I can't do that. I don't have it in the budget. And she's like, what did you say? Basically go
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:just said, if don't do anything, if you're not doing that, like don't spend the money on this banquette magic that you're doing. Cause it's just going to be a pinch point instead of the focus. And he's
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:And guess what?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:cost me money.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:And you love it. Okay.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:uh, I love it, Eric. I love it. I love it. Every time. I love it. So
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, and
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:think of my sweet friend showing up and saving my butt, because I would've screwed it up,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:spending your money and saving your butt. That's, that's a good pairing.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:you know, end result. Is it, it was the best decision for that project. It really was. So there's a little love fest there.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I'm glad that you love it.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:you know what, I think you were talking about how it's so unusual. I mean, I, I guess I hadn't really thought about it, but. For, for designers to like to work together or collaborate or for there to be some collaboration. And then I thought, you know what, this is why people bring in flower arrangements to have them redone when their decorator or their designer did them and they look like trash because they thought they could do it. And then they bring it like, Oh,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Hmm.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Oh, honey, but it's, you know, and I think ego, ego gets in the way of really good stuff sometimes. And I do think that is the problem in those cases. Um, and that sort of siloed thinking, I think we all could benefit from talking it through and I process everything verbally. I mean, if you've been around me at all, you know exactly what I'm thinking. So that's,
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:to, I kind of do it in internal and digestion and then we can figure it out. But
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:that's good. Keep that up. The filters fall away a little.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:well, the face filter doesn't, the face, the face shows it all.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:no, he's like Switzerland and you can't get an answer out of him. And it's like four days later and I want instant gratification. I want the answer now. It's off the cuff and I know what I'm hot headed and I'm going to like, just give me the damn answer. He's like, let me, let me think about this. I'm like, Oh my God, Sweden, you're killing me.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So Stuart, are you the ninja? Cause like you, you say very little and like, you just sort of swoop in.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, that is, uh,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:It's the design
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:role. that's my role.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, Barrett, what do you consider is your, um, like your signature style? Because I'm seeing you're, you're sitting in your kitchen, right? Is that
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I'm in my dining room, but I opened up the wall to the
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. And it's beautiful. is what to tell us about your like, your style.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:You know, it's so funny, like, my own personal style, I think, um, is there's some antiqueness happening. I like things that feel old. I live in an older house, and so my kitchen, I wanted it to feel like it was 100 years old. Um, I love English. Things and color kind of Georgian color palettes, but not the fancy side. Um, but then, you know, I have a modern painting over here, so it's a little mixed. Um, I'm very sentimental, I guess, is the bottom line. So things that I just fall in love with, they stay around, um, that I have. Paintings that are done by friends and now that I was telling you this or my mentor, her husband was painter and did a little oak tree painting for me. Most of my art is trees. So I don't know what that's about. Um, but I love that. Look at my own home. My favorite thing about the work I get to do is. I get to do a little of everything because I can appreciate all of it. Like I'm obsessed with all kinds of design and I can appreciate all of it. I can't live in all of it. Um, you know, like I love to work on something that's very sleek and modern. I can't do that. Like that requires a lot of tidying. Um, so, you know, I like, I like a lot of books. Um, that sort of. Almost English clutter ish, makes me feel cozy and at home.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I have never heard of the term
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah. But that's a
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:but it instantly gives you instantly gives you an image.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I mean, that's kind of how I live, whether by decision or necessity. Um, but yeah, my house was built in the forties, so I have tons of windows and great daylight, which I love. I redid my kitchen years ago and that was the best money I could have ever spent. I loved cooking it. I splurged on a stove that I probably shouldn't have, but I don't care. And, um, she pretty. Can you see
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:that a Locra? No. Is it a Locra? No,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:will you tidy it up You un english it and take your pretty pictures and we'll post it on the
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, if you're comfortable with that, yeah, we'll post
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Yeah, if you're comfortable
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Um, yeah, I can post some pictures.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:if you want.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:No, let's don't do that for gumbo night. I don't know. I'd probably love that. I'm, I'm the person that's like, Hey, everybody, I'm cooking tonight. Um, at Halloween, all my neighbors come eat. We always do gumbo for Halloween too. And they always trick or treat, like get a glass of
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:in it?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:huh?
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:it have corn in it? Like, pieces of corn. going to have to Google Gumball, so.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, why don't you just, I'll just put you on the list. I'll bring you some. Um, it's spicy.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:it only took you 45 minutes to get there to figure that out, but okay. Next.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I would have done it anyway. So yeah, I mean, I love, I love, um, natural materials. My dad was a ceramic artist when I was a kid, a potter and my daughter's potter. So I love pottery and, um, marble and things like that, that are just very
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:You're just a big old hippie.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I guess, sure. I mean,
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, what it feels like, what it sounds like is, you know, like we always talk about how every client's different, right? I think every designer is different. We say that too, but she seems like she's very, like, Barrett is very authentic. She's true to herself. Right? So it comes down to the ceramics. Like that is real, like it's real stuff. That's handmade items. The art that you get, there's
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:in this podcast that we all as designers seem to go back and gravitate toward these things that is of earth, right?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:and authenticity I think is a great word. Um, because if something, and it's so funny because it feels like lately, and I don't know if y'all have experienced this as well, but for so many years, it's like, I'm never going to use. Porcelain that looks like marble because it doesn't do it well. And we're kind of starting to see there's some better facsimiles out there and I'm getting more comfortable with using it. And they, it allows for it in different things. So that's been a real shock to me. Cause I've always been like, no, do the real thing. You know, if you can't do the real thing, do something else. But, um, I'm starting to eat my words a little bit. And my mom always said to season my words well, cause I would eat them one day and she was right.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I love that Well, I'm writing this one down. Season your words. Well,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:cute is
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I do talk pretty spicy, but that's not what she meant.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Uh, well, I think that's so true, especially with materials. Like this is because Dwayne sometimes will say, Oh, don't use this or never use that. And I'm like, And you don't say it very often, Dwayne, but it's just, it's in a moment. It's in a situation. And I'm like, well, you can't always say that. And you're like, no, I'm not saying always I'm saying in most general. And I'm like, but you never know. Cause that's what it comes around. Like with somebody, when we were looking at some, um, some, uh, porcelain kitchen countertop was like, when we were, uh, was working on us, I would have never thought that I'd ever give that a chance. And it was honest to God, more beautiful than the marble that we had.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:And that's, that's what you run into. I think you live long enough. You eat your words. But I I love things that
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:I'm not that smart. Well
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:And it's funny. Cause I can't remember what it was, but he was saying on one of y'all's podcasts, something like I would never do that. And I thought, well, shit, I did it three times yesterday, but okay.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:you can be wrong. That's
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:this, you know, this is also where he said that he would never use the fabric in multiple homes and he had the same damn DNA fabric in 17 people's homes in the same summer. Now with that said, it was
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I used to not, I used to try so hard not to repeat myself ever, but when you find something that's really, really good and then you don't use it, well, so the color in here, I'll show you. It's on my ceiling too. It's Nelson blue. And I love this color. And I've used it a few times at client's house, some on ceilings, some on walls. And it's like, golly, you're starting to be that girl. And they tease me at Benjamin Moore about it. And when I was doing this, one of my best friends that lives up the road. Was over here and I was just obsessing over what color I was like, I need something that's kind of like Nelson blue, but like I got to do something different. And she's like, why
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Why?
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:don't you love that? Color? I said, yeah. Don't you use it in other people's houses that you want to be beautiful? So yeah, but like, I want to do something different. She's like, you're just being a dumb ass now. I was like, okay, you're right.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:you should have just got it and had, had the color mix and then just had your
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:But one drop.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:had your night, your, your own color code put on it. Barrett, Barrett, Barrett, blue, gray,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:a, if ego was driving me, that's what I would have done. But no, it's just like, you're right. Michelle, she talks me down off of that ledge a lot. She's good like that. She's a good friend. She, she checks me as they say. Um, sometimes she's like, you're just being a dumbass. Okay.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well,
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:I mean, you're both worlds, but you're world. Do we see something that's on the horizon that's, uh, gonna surprise us? Is any change up? We're like, ah, it's kind of just keeps on rolling. Nothing, nothing coming. That's crazy.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Oh no, there's a lot that's crazy. I mean, It all feels crazy to me because I'm old enough now to where I've lived through it before already. So like all these 70s things that are back, it, it threw me a little bit. It's like, oh, I don't, I don't know how to feel about that. Oh, I love corduroy though. Oh my gosh. There was like three days a year I could wear corduroy and Baton Rouge.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Right.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:And it was all jacket. Cause I can't wear corduroy pants on Stardefire. Yeah.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:the seventies as we were at a showroom in Atlanta a couple weeks ago and there was this lamp and it was just, you know, I knew it was retro inspired. We'll say, you know, um, and, but it had a, you know, it was just, it had a really sexy shape to it. I pointed to it and I said, Oh, Um, I love that. And Dwayne goes, you know, I lived through that in the seventies.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Like it looks like it was on three's company, right?
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, but it was, it was, it had that style, but it was in like modern materials. And so it did, it felt like it was just fresh
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:admit, I just have no respect for it. I just, I just can't like, uh, you all are much better designers in that. If it is a mid century modern, again, I respect it, but I really don't care for it. I just don't. And I really, really don't like, um, heavy Asian as in, you know, I like a little moments of it, but if it's heavy
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Mr. Shin Wazari doesn't
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Right. I know.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:but, but, but. But red, black, it's, it's the colors, the color combination. I specifically read black goals, that kind of Asian
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:So you don't like a Chinese buffet style. Sure.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:correct, correct. That it's just, but there are people out there that do, right. I just find that very, very, very unappealing. And so that whole seventies thing is just, it's not even me growing up in the seventies. I just. Don't find it to be very pretty. And it's like one of the, there, I really didn't know Barrett's style. So this is what this podcast is about. And so when you say that, I love me some good English and books and layers and chintz and florals. And I'm probably foo foo ier than what you are, but that, that layers of, of style, that's what I love about it. Duff, and you can't give me enough, uh, of that. And I, that's what my wheelhouse is. So I, I will definitely lean on Beatrice, but yet in the same instant, just like you did, I'll pivot and put me a great old big piece of modern art in there. And like, Ooh, that's good. And you know, uh, somebody will say, well, that doesn't make any sense. And it's like, it makes perfect sense to me. That's, that's, that's the mix, right? You've got this beautiful old sideboard with a modern piece of art letters. Nothing prettier than that. Nothing
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, and you know, when I was little, I remember telling my mom, I'm going to have a house one day and every room is going to have a different style, which we all know vomit. Like I would never do that now. But as a kid, what I was telling her is like, I love this. And I love that. And so I think I ended up picking a job where I get to play with all the colors. I get to play with all the toys, but that's not necessarily what's in my own home.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:I have one, I have one last question for you. And then I have two things that I want to share because I saw these on my way home and they made me, they brought me joy. Um, it's since you've listened to the podcasts, No, it's not
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Jesus.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:but thank, but thank you for your service. Um, one thing I hesitate about art and we'll try not to get on a side, a huge tangent and take too long, but, um, in 50 words or less Barrett, when it comes to art, does
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:that this is an
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:does it mean, does it need to mean something now? I know personally in your home is one thing, but where do you fall? Where do you fall on the spectrum? I want to
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:a client.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I am about 75 percent of Dwayne's feeling about art. So I've listened to all the podcasts.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Surprise.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:it's so much easier to, to, I try to get to know my clients like probably a little too well. There's a little psychology going on. I like to get in their
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:That's 87 words. Your
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Your dream house. Sorry. Verbose is definitely something I am. So I apologize. But yeah, I think art is better when it's meaningful in some way. Like it says something about the person, whether that is, I collect fine art, or that is, I like the beach or whatever. I think it, it does mean something.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Okay. Here's the two things I saw. One of which. It was earlier today and then you'll know why I mentioned this to you when I tell you, but um, the one that I saw while I was waiting in line to get lunch was from the disappointing affirmations on Instagram that I love so much. And it comes from the, um, uh, Maya Angelou, basically, when you know better, you do better, right? That kind of like idea. So it said, you did the best you could with the knowledge you had at the time. Which is just a nice way of saying you were a fucking idiot.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Oh, wow.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:That is very true.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:about right. Yeah.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:The other one that I saw today that brought me a lot of joy and people who listen will know I saw it at 1111. And if you know, that's my time, That's my time. Right. So that's my time. So what it was, was it was an image of like an old, uh, you know, those signs that they put out of like old gas stations, but he put like the text on it. And it said, if I die and come back as a hillbilly, is that re internation? And so I died at 11, but my daddy always said, What in tarnation? And I saw it at 11 11, and I said, Oh, there you are, Daddy! Glad to see you're here!
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:wow.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:I love hearing your stories about your dad winking at
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, I'll
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Well, I'm going to say this. The reason I looked at Jeremy is Jeremy's father passed away, uh, with Agent Orange, uh, with leukemia. And so that's honestly the reason with it, right? No, did I get it
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:It was multiple myelomas, but it's similar to it. It's a blood
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:and that's, uh, Honestly, that was the reason I even part of it was in my heart because I knew it was a little bit of a Jeremy connection, um, out there that he would understand the, the sacrifices even more than anybody else would, um, at this moment that it's, that it truly is. We, uh, we got to get this right. We got to get this right.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, my mom, I lost my mom to cancer that was environmental as well. Not from fighting in a war, but probably from stripping wallpaper. But she is who I feel like is responsible for me loving houses the way I do and understanding floor plans. She sketched on graph paper all the time growing up about how she would remodel our house. And I sit on her lap and like fool around with that. No, I don't understand. What does that line mean? And she had a math education, which she gave me none of, but, um, she did give me a profound love of houses and appreciation for lots of different ones. And, um, I think that's, I think in floor plan because of her. Okay.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, thanks, Mama.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:well, it goes back to, you can have a direct connection that you kind of understand where you get your artsy ness from, right? And, um, Stuart, um, loves to build and do, and I, I think that, that your sweet daddy, Bill, had that quality to him. That I, some reason, equate what your gift is to
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:Yeah, he, yeah, he was a mechanical engineer. So he always, yeah, Um, had to solve the problem, you know, for, well, for a machine to work quite honestly, but he also, he,
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:know that.
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:he also built every house we lived in. So, um, or remodeled as, you know, and, you know, and like I've talked before, my mom had an, uh, a degree in art and a backup degree in special education. So, you know, I get. My brain gets conflicted going back and forth, but kind of like you Barrett, I do, I, you said I see in floor plan and I totally get that because like I will walk in somewhere. I'm like, Oh my God, it's wrong, but I'm not here to look at that right now. So how do I bring it up? And I've learned how to bring it up in conversations like, well, we should probably change this and ultimately 90
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:The
stuart-guest892_1_08-08-2024_154215:percent of the time we get to change it. But, um, you know, for those times we don't, and I can't figure out how to fit furniture in is when it comes to you. Okay.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:that, and you know, it's so funny cause I feel like you were talking about problem solving and I feel like that is so much of what we do that we don't talk about that. That's what we are doing. We're solving these issues with the flow and the function. And my dad was very artistic, you know, did pottery and stuff, but then my mom was this practical force. And so I kind of feel like, you know, they're both in my head a little bit. And it's like, yeah, but that's going to be hard to clean is my mom. Cause she was really good at that. Um, I on the other hand failed miserably in that department, but I still, I know when it's going to be hard to clean. Cause I can hear her in my head, but that's neat that your dad was like that. And your mom was artistic. You got a little of both too. I think we all sort of fall in the middle.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:where'd you get your talent from, Jeremy? It just exuded out of you? Cause mine sure didn't come from my parents. I don't think it came from your
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:mine didn't either. No. My dad was a musician. Um, and my mom was, mom was not, not artistic. My dad wasn't artistic.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Don't say that being a musician isn't artistic. That's
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:No, no, no, well, no, I mean it is an art, you know, don't get me wrong He played in a band for 30 years and all that kind of stuff But no and I was in band when I was young I was musical So I do have like that part of me is there but you know the rest I don't know where it came from I don't know. I'm sure that I have some kind of fairy godmother somewhere that just kind of gave it to me
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:Well, my mom thinks that Ashley Furniture is highbrow. So that's, I don't know where mine came from. So there you go.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Well, Barrett, thank you so much for joining us today. This has been a wonderful time to spend time with you
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:thank you. for having me. It's always good to see y'all. And it's so fun to listen to you all talk to everybody on the podcast. I've really enjoyed it. I'm in the car.
dwayne_1_08-08-2024_154151:your, what's your, favorite color again? What's your color that you love? Your blue color?
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Oh, on the walls, it's Nelson blue. It's a Williamsburg color from Benjamin Moore.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:We'll share it down in the show

jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:And do you have
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:like a porch blue.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:do you have an Instagram handle or anything you'd like to share? We'll put it down in the show notes if you do.
barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:My Instagram is interiors by Barrett.

barrett-hudkins--she-her-_1_08-08-2024_154215:Bye guys.
jeremy-rice_1_08-08-2024_154215:Okay,
